Puritan Research Center Fall 2021 Colloquia: “Role of Predestination in the Pastoral Ministry of William Perkins’s successor, Paul Baynes”

The Puritan Research Center at PRTS supports and encourages thoughtful discussions that deal with facets of Puritanism and Continental (Post) Reformation thought, including historic trajectories and early modern context, from a variety of perspectives. Doctoral students, faculty, and other researchers will present their findings of original research in a colloquium.

Topic: “Role of Predestination in the Pastoral Ministry of William Perkins’s successor, Paul Baynes”
Date: Thursday, November 11 from 3:00 p.m – 4:30 p.m. ET
Speaker: Dr. David H. Kranendonk, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary
Location: PRTS Chapel or Live-stream

As a successor of William Perkins, author of an extensive commentary on Ephesians 1, and defender of the supralapsarian view of predestination, Paul Baynes evidences strong convictions on the doctrine of predestination.  As an author of many sermons and pastoral letters, as well as of devotional guides and catechetical works, he evidences strong concern for pastoral ministry.  This discussion explores the intersection of the orthodox Reformed teaching of predestination and puritan pastoral ministry as it is embodied in Paul Baynes’s ministry.

The event will be followed by period of discussion during which participants can pose questions. For those unable to be present on-campus in Grand Rapids, the seminar will be live-streamed via Zoom. There is no cost to participate.

Note: The seminar will be held in the chapel on the PRTS campus.

PRESS RELEASE: Dr. Victor Emma-Adamah appointed at Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary as Visiting Professor

Grand Rapids, MI—Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary (“PRTS”) today announced the appointment of Dr. Emma-Adamah as Visiting Professor in Philosophical Theology.

Joel R. Beeke, President of PRTS comments, “I am pleased to announce that Dr. Victor Emma-Adamah (Univ. of Cambridge) has accepted an appointment to the position of Visiting Professor in Philosophical Theology for the academic year 2021-22 at PRTS. His teaching includes, ‘Issues in Contemporary Theology,’ as well as other courses in theology and philosophy. Dr. Emma-Adamah’s exposure to international research, teaching, and writing, commencing in Côte d’Ivoire, Nigeria, South Africa, and continued in the United Kingdom with Professor Catherine Pickstock, and Professor Douglas Hedley at the Faculty of Divinity at the University of Cambridge, as well as his acquaintance with both the European and American academia contributes to a healthy diversification of our faculty. We are grateful that he is enthusiastically putting his research, writing, and teaching skills into action in the service of the academy and church.” He and his wife Dr. Catherine (Katie) Broboske were married several weeks ago. Please pray for a blessing on his teaching at PRTS.

The First DMin Class at PRTS

This is a big week for Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary—not only because of our annual conference from Thursday to Saturday—but also because we are having our first class in our Doctor of Ministry program—a DMin in Homiletics (that is, a degree that focuses on preaching for those who are already preachers). Above you can see a picture of this first DMin class being taught by Dr. Adriaan Neele. The picture below is of us with one of the new DMin students, Sungwon Jahng (a Korean pastor from Los Angeles) who came to Michigan early so that he could attend our church last Lord’s Day, so we invited him over for dinner and had a delightful time of fellowship. Our DMin degree in Homiletics was fully accredited by the Association of Theological Schools in June of this year. Please pray that God will bless this degree to hundreds, perhaps thousands, of preachers in coming years and decades, if the Lord tarries.

We are humbled to report that PRTS now offers the full spectrum of theological degrees (MA, MDiv, ThM, DMin, and PhD), all of which are fully accredited. We’re grateful to reach this landmark shortly after having celebrated our 25th year anniversary. Your prayers for the seminary’s worldwide ministry are coveted!

Congratulations to Mr. Ian Turner!
Congratulations to Mr. Ian Turner who successfully sustained his oral comprehensive exams yesterday. He now moves into the dissertation stage of his program. The title of his dissertation is “Take with You Words, and Return to the LORD: A Functional-Cognitive Approach to Understanding the Message of Hosea 12–14.” According to Dr. Daniel Timmer, “The dissertation uses a combination of linguistic tools to explore the coherence and complexity of a section of Hosea often judged to be incoherent and problematic. The project will situate its findings in biblical theology with an eye to applying Hosea’s message in contemporary contexts.” Dr. Timmer is supervising Ian Turner’s dissertation in Biblical Studies.
