New Master of Arts in Biblical Counseling (MABC) Degree

PRTS is excited to announce its new Master of Arts in Biblical Counseling (MABC) degree program. This program is designed to serve the church with biblical, Reformed, and experiential counselors who teach and model the wisdom of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Program Distinctives:

  • Committed to the Scriptures
  • Creedal and Confessionally Reformed
  • Grounded in Systematic Theology
  • Informed by Biblical Theology
  • Drawing on Biblical Examples of Counseling
  • Experiential Emphasis
  • Hands-on Approach

The MABC degree program requires a total of 62 credit hours and can be completed in two years.

“There is a great need in our churches for pastors and ministry leaders who understand the effects of the Fall on individuals and on our social order, and who can pastorally care for the souls of men and women in a way that biblically brings about restoration, redemption and transformation, both with God and with one another. I believe this new MABC program will train such counselors.”

– Dr. Mark Kelderman, Dean of Students and Spiritual Formation, as well as Instructor in Pastoral Theology

Congratulations Brazil ThM Graduates!

Saturday, October 22, 2021 was a historic moment in the strategic cooperation of Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary (PRTS) and Martin Bucer Seminary Brazil (MBS); on this day the first five students graduated from the accredited ThM degree program in Brazil.

These graduates were able to complete their studies in three years while remaining in their ministry context of teaching, preaching, and pastoring throughout their country. Both the faculty of PRTS and MBS Brazil participated in the ThM program. Dr. Jonas Madureira of MBS Brazil commented, “The accredited program offers quality education with academic integrity from an international perspective of scholarship within a Brazilian context.” Dr. Jonathon Beeke of PRTS commented, “Teaching at the Brazil ‘campus’ is a delightful experience, and contributes to the international, multicultural dimension of the program. The program is academically and spiritually enriching to both students and instructors.”

The growing ThM program in Brazil contributes to the lowering cost of education; students remain in their ministry context and have full access to all the library e-resources supporting the ThM degree program.

The First DMin Class at PRTS

This is a big week for Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary—not only because of our annual conference from Thursday to Saturday—but also because we are having our first class in our Doctor of Ministry program—a DMin in Homiletics (that is, a degree that focuses on preaching for those who are already preachers). Above you can see a picture of this first DMin class being taught by Dr. Adriaan Neele. The picture below is of us with one of the new DMin students, Sungwon Jahng (a Korean pastor from Los Angeles) who came to Michigan early so that he could attend our church last Lord’s Day, so we invited him over for dinner and had a delightful time of fellowship. Our DMin degree in Homiletics was fully accredited by the Association of Theological Schools in June of this year. Please pray that God will bless this degree to hundreds, perhaps thousands, of preachers in coming years and decades, if the Lord tarries.

We are humbled to report that PRTS now offers the full spectrum of theological degrees (MA, MDiv, ThM, DMin, and PhD), all of which are fully accredited. We’re grateful to reach this landmark shortly after having celebrated our 25th year anniversary. Your prayers for the seminary’s worldwide ministry are coveted!

Doctor of Ministry (DMin) Program

Don’t miss your opportunity to apply for the PRTS Doctor of Ministry program starting this August!

This is a four-year program (maximum 6 years) designed for those who desire to advance their ministry skills, particularly in preaching and homiletics.

The specific focus of the PRTS Doctor of Ministry program is biblical, Reformed, experiential and practical preaching. Courses in the DMin homiletics program will be taught by Dr. Joel Beeke, Dr. Gerald Bilkes, and Dr. Adriaan Neele.

The upcoming August course offering is Introduction to Homiletical Studies. This course is an introduction to homiletical studies, including the history of homiletics, and will be primarily based on primary source readings, secondary literature overview, developments in homiletics, and research method. The classical Roman and Greek rhetoric and oratory will be studied, as well as transitional moments from Augustine to the mid-1800s. In addition, attention will be given to the trajectories of homiletics in the Reformed tradition including the Dutch experiential tradition of preaching and Dutch handbooks of homiletics from the 17th to 20th century. These primary sources will be set in historical context, and trajectories of continuity and discontinuity will be discussed. Attention will be given to the classical structure of the sermon, as well as a discussion on the intersection of preacher, audience, psychology, affections, and communication.

For a little less than $325.00 USD per month over four years you can earn a fully accredited Doctor of Ministry degree grounded in biblical, Reformed, experiential and practical preaching from Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary.

This degree program is designed to equip you to become a more effective communicator, both in your pulpit and writing ministries. Multiple church-matching scholarships are available up to a maximum of $1950.00 per year. This Church-Matching Scholarship is awarded to a DMin student whose church agrees to financially support their studies.
