Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary is an educational institution whose mission is to prepare students to serve Christ, His church, and the academy through biblical, experiential, and practical ministry. The seminary purposes that such training be God-glorifying and in accord with the Scriptures and historic Reformed creeds for the promotion and defense of the gospel of Jesus Christ. In dependence on the Holy Spirit, we believe that this purpose is well-served by providing theological instruction and training to facilitate the development of knowledge and skills as well as personal piety and Christian character that are essential for faithful Christian ministry.

Position Summary

Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary invites applications for a full-time faculty position in Old Testament. The successful candidate will possess the requisite degrees and demonstrate excellence in teaching. Applicants must evidence a commitment to the infallible authority of Scripture, upholding the doctrines and teaching of the Westminster Standards and Three Forms of Unity, and living a godly life. Primary responsibilities include teaching Old Testament introductory courses, Biblical Hebrew acquisition courses, as well as Biblical Hebrew exegesis courses at the MDiv/MA level. Occasional courses may be required at the ThM/PhD level. Other responsibilities involve mentoring students, contributing to the academic interests and administration of the seminary, and producing high-quality research. Significant involvement in the life and ministry of the church is presumed.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Teach core courses in Old Testament, including:
    • Old Testament Introduction
    • Biblical Hebrew language courses (introductory and advanced)
    • Biblical Hebrew Exegesis courses (e.g., Narratives; Poets and Prophets)
    • Other more specialized courses in OT studies as assigned
  • Supervise theses and independent research projects as assigned
  • Participate in faculty governance, curriculum development, and strategic planning
  • Advise and mentor students, particularly those preparing for pastoral ministry
  • Contribute to scholarly research and writing in service of the church and academy
  • Engage with the broader church through preaching, teaching, and/or denominational involvement

Required Qualifications

  • Earned PhD in Old Testament or closely related field (ABD will be considered)
  • Demonstrated competence in Biblical Hebrew and Biblical Aramaic; familiarity with other related Ancient Near Eastern languages is desirable
  • Clear commitment to the Reformed faith as expressed in the Westminster Standards and Three Forms of Unity
  • Active participation and leadership (i.e., ordained office and pastoral experience) in a local church
  • Evidence of a heart/passion for Christ’s church
  • Proven teaching ability at the graduate or seminary level
  • Willingness to relocate to Grand Rapids, MI.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Publications in Old Testament studies or related disciplines
  • Experience in online or hybrid instruction; familiarity with various learning management platforms
  • Familiarity with contemporary issues related to Old Testament studies, biblical theology, and hermeneutics
  • Willingness to teach outside of OT as needed (e.g., biblical theology, hermeneutics)
